for Joico

Thank you to Joico & TAG Creative for the opportunity to share my work in consideration for the upcoming shoot with Kate Hudson.

I’m Heather, a photographer & director based in New York whose thrill of portraiture lies in the intimate over the epic. I’m passionate about capturing a more honest representation of my subjects by allowing for genuine, vulnerable & collaborative connections on set.

My DP Grayson Kohs & I work closely together to craft naturalistic moments with varying angles & frame rates to engage the viewer. We share an informal demeanor that fosters a safe, non-judgmental container to take risks & lens authentic emotions. For this campaign, Grayson would employ his Arri Alexa 35 to capture a mix of static polished content & handheld candid moments.

Regardless of whether we are shooting in studio or on location, my lighting directors (with full teams in both NY & LA) and I prioritize dynamic and flattering continuous lighting (the same lighting for motion & stills) that is always tailored to our talent. When shaping daylight is not readily available, we employ Arri HMIs, Cineo R15s and Bi-Color Aputures to mimic directional sunlight or elevate what would naturally happen with practicals. In location houses, we aim to push as much light through windows from outside to create a believable environment and maximize space inside.

I recommend shooting both stills & motion together over the two days to maximize efficiency & maintain a similar look & feel. This approach allows us to use the same continuous lighting setups without needing to recreate the hair or scene setups on Day 2. Our plan would be to have three setups pre-lit at all times, enabling Kate to move seamlessly between them. As soon as we finish with one setup, my team will immediately prepare the next, ensuring Kate is never waiting on us.

Lastly, it’s important for me to collaborate with brands whose values align with my own. I’m passionate about supporting companies that prioritize sustainability & inclusivity.

1. Connection & Joi

At the heart of my work lies a deep connection with my subjects. It's all about the person in front of me, creating space on set where genuine emotions can truly unfold. I thrive on capturing that authenticity, especially with actors who have a unique ability to access the full spectrum of the human experience. There’s something particularly magical about capturing real JOI — that raw, unfiltered energy that lights up the frame. Despite long shot lists and deliverables, I’m always driven to create moments that are believable, never forced or contrived.

In a world saturated with endless social media scrolls that often feel saccharine or forced, what truly resonates is a genuine sense of connection and intimacy. It’s the human element that cuts through the noise and draws us in.

For this campaign with Kate Hudson, my vision is to capture her warm personality, natural charisma and effervescent beauty through a blend of polished and candid moments that feel genuine and relatable. By highlighting her humanness, we tap into something universal that we’re all craving.
